Om PRO

Introducing PRO

There are currently over 1.8 million pensioners in Sweden. We all have a great deal in common even though we all have our own unique personalities and personal interests. All of us want to live and meet on our own terms. In short, we want to enjoy life.

The Swedish National Pensioners’ Organisation (PRO) is a professional association and a place for Sweden’s pensioners to meet. The organisation is governed democratically by PRO members – a popular movement in the true sense of the term. The day-to-day work of PRO includes promoting the interests, social life and personal development of its members throughout Sweden.

Together we are strong – and can ensure that life as a pensioner is better and more enjoyable.

PRO – a voice that is heard

PRO protects the interests of pensioners in society. We have a well-developed contact network among leading politicians and actively pursue issues relating to pensioners in the media. PRO believes that society works best when we join together and support each other.

A secure pension

Pensions go up and down due to the unstable Swedish pension system while the income gap between pensioners and wage earners continues to increase. On top of that, pensioners in Sweden pay higher tax than those in work. At PRO we want to change this.

Functional care services

PRO is calling for an increase in the resources for elderly care and more efficient systems to prevent people from being pushed from pillar to post.

Good housing

Most of us would prefer to stay in our own homes, but may some day need economic support from the municipality to adapt our homes. An increase in the number of residential facilities and sheltered housing would also enable more elderly people to live independently. We would like municipal authorities to assume greater responsibility for elderly housing.

PRO’S WORK HAS CONTRIBUTED TO

  • Gradually reducing inequities in pension taxation
  • New legislation on age discrimination
  • Stopping legislation to increase restraint being used within dementia care
  • Better monitoring of pharmaceuticals for elderly people

Activities and companionship

We have 400,000 members in 1,400 associations throughout Sweden.

We explore the world together

We arrange everything from theatre trips to Stockholm to the med holidays in Andalucía. Over 100,000 people travel with PRO every year.

Genealogy, wine tasting and learning new languages

Over 120,000 people join our study circles every year. We also have our very own folk high school in Gysinge where you can learn anything from upholstery to English.

Exercise is an essential part of life

We offer many kinds of activities and opportunities for exercise (e.g. Nordic walking, dance and golf) and PRO is the largest group in Sweden for boules.
